Public Media- Lecture 7
In the last lecture,
we all saw the commercial aspects of media. What is public media? Just to be
short and clear, I would say public media is opposite of commercial media.
It has a very
significant role in society that is its goal is not earning profit, but to
connect the world. It holds a social responsibility towards the society and
encourages development and participation of people. Some of the examples of
this media type are: ABC (radio), ABC (news), SBS, 4EB f.m, and etc.
It serves or engages
people through news, broadcasting, blogs, and articles therefore creating more
awareness among people. In short, giving everyone the opportunity to express
their views freely and have discussions on various issues. One of the basic
examples of this is the Yahoo answers, a site where people ask and answer
questions. I strongly view interactivity as one of the buzzword of Public
media.
It helps in
encouraging national heritage, identity and conversation, giving rise to a
better understand among different cultures.
According to BBC,
public value is termed as “Embedding public service ethos”.
Also public value is
one of the most significant components of public media.
Public value
comprises of, valuing public interests against market and corporate interests,
valuing license fee money and so on.
The news style of
this media is very considerable and presented in a very serious and broadsheet
style. Some of its drawbacks are that, it becomes dull and boring at times, is poorly presented and is out of touch at times.
At last, I would like
to conclude that Public media is a very proactive media type, which not only
encourages interactivity but also creates a better understanding among people.
Thank you
