The Influencing World Of Media - Week 2

Media has recovered a drastic change from past. Old media, also known as heritage or traditional media, where everything was “spoon-fed” has now been reformed with the advent of Internet. The new media has brought a big change. Interactivity and easy access, are the two tag words that are the main advantages of the new media.

Week two, talks about the three forms of web iterations, web 1.0, web 2.0 and web 3.0, where users are classified accordingly. The web 1.0 is best described as “Information web” which focuses mainly on companies and is used for business purposes, consisting mainly of ads and is used by marketers.

The social web, which is the main buzzword in today’s media world, has made a huge impact in framing social interaction. The web 2.0 has a huge impact in facilitating and fostering social interaction, from online gaming to social networking sites like Facebook. Interactivity is the catchword of web 2.0, where the main focus is on social groups.

Now talking about web 3.0, a further step in the world of media, also known as “semantic web” focuses on individuals. It retrieves information, such as how the page was generated, the last time it was updated, what is it about, and which keywords represent which content.

One of the main points of semantic web is hyperlocalisation - referring to Internet being more localized these days. If looked at the positive side the audience gets the news its way, that is the precise information they want and specific advertising related to their searches. While the minus point is the lack of general knowledge. Also, with the increase use of online media, because it is inexpensive and easily accessible, one of the main questions arises is that will these sources incur costs in nearby future. The online news, which is free and easily available for people, will cost in the upcoming time.
something to be considered, as media is becoming more competitive.
