The Skills They Don't Teach You: Real-World Personal Growth

After months of overthinking, I finally found the right topic to write about — "The real-life personal development skills we all need."

Where It All Started?

For a long time, I struggled to understand what people really expected from me at work — especially in my career. I’ve been a Bid Writer for over 1.5 years now! I discovered this profession in 2023 when I left my marketing specialist role in a small city and took a chance on a big firm in a bigger place.

It sounded perfect: a content writing role with better pay and a fresh start. Reality check? I had three different managers. One didn’t like working with me. Another started hating me (based on my perception). Only one manager genuinely tried to help me.

I was working hard, but not smart. When they made me redundant, it crushed me.

No, it wasn’t just "cost-cutting." They didn’t see potential in me — and honestly, I couldn’t blame them. I wasn’t communicating well, and I wasn’t backing my ideas with evidence.

It hurt, badly. But instead of giving up, I made a decision: I’m going to get better, no matter how long it takes.

The Two Skills I Needed (and Still Work On)

  • Clear, articulate communication
  • Backing opinions with evidence

Simple? Yes. Easy? LOL, no.

How I Actually Improved (And You Can Too)

Honestly, I didn’t follow a "guru course" or read 1000 self-help books.
I literally asked ChatGPT: "How do I improve my communication skills?" And here’s what worked for me:

1. Talk for 3-5 minutes non-stop on anything

Pick a random topic. Speak. Ramble. Bullshit if needed. But just keep going.

Example:
“If animals could talk, which would be the rudest?”
ChatGPT said cats. And honestly, it made sense — cats definitely give off "I don’t care about you, peasant" vibes. 🐱

Meanwhile, I could only think of lions... and the Lion King... and Mufasa... not very convincing, huh?

The point is: Keep practicing. Get the junk words out of your brain. Find your flow.

2. Use the Problem-Situation-Solution Framework

Whenever you talk about something — especially with your manager — try this:

  • Problem: What’s wrong?

  • Situation: Why does it matter right now?

  • Solution: What should we do about it?

You’ll sound smarter, clearer, and way more confident.

Also, pro-tip: prepare like it’s an exam.
Use "Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly" to stay organised when you speak.

Final Thoughts

I’m not a finished product.
I still have days when I overthink every email or freeze up in meetings.
But I’ve learned that personal development isn’t sexy. It’s not about perfection.
It’s about showing up messy, trying again, and laughing at yourself a little.

So if you’re struggling with communication or self-doubt at work — you’re not alone.
Start small. Speak up. Get clear. Back yourself.

You got this. (And if not today, there’s always tomorrow.) 💥

“P.S. If you see me talking to myself in the mirror, mind your business. It’s personal growth happening in real time.” 😂
